Ivana Helsinki S/S 2013

By: Felipe Francois
A story about a solar eclipse in the 1940s in Finland was the inspiration for this season’s look at the Ivana Helsinki fashion show. Featured in the show was a short film about the events of that day about 74 years ago, an event so sudden and gloomy that many thought it was the end of the world. The film, however, incorporated high fashion and dramatic choreography to add to the effects. But the show didn’t end there.

Afterwards, the models walked down the runway one by one wearing varying degrees of styles and colors, from pretty florals to simple monotones to bold prints. To the delight of the crowd, some of those in attendance wore 3-D glasses to enjoy the effects of the first set of models’ legs, which were adorned with special paint in bright colors to create the illusion. The last set of models strutted down in floral dresses, some short, some long, some fitted, and some flowy while colors ranged from deep blues, dark and light greens, and burnt oranges.
Paola Suhonen who is the artist and creative mind behind the fashion line, explained that her line featured a lot of silk, and the lighter green styles were made with basic cottons, which act as a good base for the color.
The models took their last walk and the runway was filled with a medley of colors and patterns. “It was a moment of never ending light or eternal darkness.”

Just as soon as you think that you should put your running shoes on, designer, Monika Chiang expertly manages to combine the collection’s classic athletic style with luxe fabrications. Discovering inspiration from a recent trip to South Africa, Ms. Chiang found the high energy and beauty she experienced there a point of reference for her designs.

Certainly translating athleticism into her design aesthetic, she paired a parachute silk track pant in mango with a georgette wrap blouse in ivory and a leather moto jacket in black.  She boldly drapes her models in vibrant colors for a flirtatious ensemble.  Monika Chiang’s eclectic collection made for an exciting release.
The color palette consisted of mango, leather blacks, navy, ivory, emerald, and burnt yellows.  Textures of leather, silk, watersnake skin, and suede in dramatic proportions and trims prepared the models for the rugged terrain of South Africa.  As you traverse through the South African jungles, Ms. Chiang prepared you with an outfit for every occasion. From safari embellished yoke dresses to an out of Africa embellished leather pencil skirt in ivory to straw baseball hats and studded leather bras, this designer has already packed your bag for this excursion.
Each outfit was matched with killer high-heeled strappy sandals securing you in for the trek across Cape Town.
Monika Chiang – where your energetic athletic aesthetic infuses with jungle sexiness.

Charlotte Ronson S/S 2013

By: Inna Bosenko
Charlotte Ronson shows are all about youth and playfulness, this year being no different. The very first look stepping onto the runway was a cream colored belted dress with sheer sleeves and a strip of a light fabric cropped slightly above the knee. More looks with sheer fabric and lace cutouts, as well as completely see-through jackets followed suggesting very subdued sexiness.

I also picked up on the effortlessness trend: models’ hair was down and simple, makeup was light accentuating cheekbones and nothing drew attention away from playful elements of clothing. My favorite pieces included an asymmetrical while/navy/azure flowy dress and a pleated mint dress cinched at the waist. There was an oversized thin belt that stole the show and became my favorite accessory on the runway. It accentuated the waist and lightly flowing in the wind as the models worked the runway.

As a whole, the collection conveyed innocence and purity: fabric was flowing and colors were restrained. Pieces were done in lighter shades of almost every color imaginable: pinks, blues, greens, yellows, creams, floral patterns and blurred stripes. There was also a presence of combinations of sporty masculine elements in cross body messenger bags and femininity in wide pleated knee-length skirts.
