Angelo Galasso: POLSOOROLOGIO Party

Written By Fashion360Magazine on Tuesday, 9 October 2012 | 00:25

By: Devin Cole
September 5th marked the beginning of Fashion Week and I kicked off the season with the POLSOOROLOGIO Party at The Plaza. The celebration was in honor of Galasso’s signature Polso Orologio shirts which are made completely by hand during a manufacturing process that consists of 85 stages.

As guests poured into the building, they were encouraged to sign their names on a statue in the lobby, an Italian tradition. Then we were ushered into Galasso’s new boutique which he opened in April of this year. Soft light illuminated his designs and glinted off the opulent detailing in the sleek boutique.
Next, we were lead down the hallway to the Oak Room in anticipation of the runway show. Impeccably styled models lined the hallway sporting pieces from Galasso’s current collection.
Once inside the Oak Room, guests anxiously awaiting the start of the presentation while being served champagne. To set the mood, a pianist took the stage and played rousing renditions of popular songs such as “Fix You” by Coldplay. Leaving the audience in awe, the performer turned the stage over to Editor-In-Chief of British GQ, Dylan Jones.
Jones gave Galasso high praise, he feigned resentment as he stated that Galasso “the most Italian, Italian” had “the most influence on British fashion”. Jones credits him with creating a more casual but polished look for men. His impact was so great in fact that the Prime Minister of England began to see wearing a tie as passé and removed them from his wardrobe.
The models filed onto the runway as the music began to play again and posed for photographs.
Personally, I loved how Galasso mixed luxe, textured fabrics and complimented the looks with lavish accessories. Even the pianist (shown at top right), was decked out with eye-catching silver cuffs.

Three New Brands to Watch in 2013

 By: Devin Cole
With fashion week quickly approaching, the anticipation is palatable here in New York City as we wait for the frenzy of glamour that is about to descend upon the city. Fashion week is wrought with a wealth of different shows and parties to attend and often newer designers get lost in the mix as we plan our schedules. We are here to give you the scoop on some up-and-coming brands that aren’t to be missed!

#1 Gunas
Gunas, founded by head designer Sugandh, is a shining example of how you don’t need to compromise your values to have the wardrobe of your dreams. A proponent of conscious consumption and an avid animal-lover, Sugandh has created a line of accessories that is 100% cruelty-free and sweat-shop-free. The name “Gunas” means “Attributes and Qualities of Nature”, a tribute to the creatures that she works to protect. You won’t find a ratty pair of Birkenstocks on this savvy business lady though; her work easily rivals non-vegan accessory lines with its progressive designs.
Once Sugandh started her line she was pleasantly surprised to find that there are a lot of like-minded consumers out there who were thrilled that she was catering to the vegan market so stylishly. Her designs have been proudly brandished by celebrities like Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy, and Anne Hathaway. She has received critical acclaim from numerous publications including Marie Claire, TIME Magazine, Veg News, Fashion Me Green, and Accessories Magazine. This designer has an international perspective on fashion which gives her line a sleek edge that is usually only found in European labels. As a result, her fan-base has swept across the globe with customers all over Europe, in Canada, Singapore, Australia, and Germany.

A piece from Gunas’s VIBE collection.
After being shocked to find that a conscientious line could look so fashion-forward, I had to speak to Sugandh to find out more.  This eloquently spoken designer’s passion for her work quickly became evident in our short conversation.
Me: What was your inspiration for your 2013 collection?
Sugandh: Well actually we just started a studio in India this year. I have a lot of family that is back in India so I decided to start a studio. I just thought this year that it would be nice if I could dedicate my collection to animals that I specifically find in the Indian environment. So I looked at a lot of peacocks and exotic animals in general. So you’ll see a lot of texture, metallics, beadwork, you will see a combination of all of this
Me: What kind of music are you listening to right now?
Sugandh: I listen to a lot of trance, I love hip hop, and of course because I am Indian, Bollywood music. It is basically just a combination of anything.
Me: Tell me a fact about yourself that I won’t find in your bio.
Sugandh: Well I have traveled to over 25 countries and I speak and understand about five languages. Yeah, that’s not on my bio.
Sugandh’s designs will be featured at the Loveit show during fashion week!
#2 Rotten Banana
rotten banana, civic lee, devin cole, fashion, 360, magazine, designers, new, 2013, hong kongHead designer of Rotten Banana, Civic Lee, has gotten a lot of attention for his ethereal nature-inspired garments. The collection embodies the spirit of this kind-hearted designer who strives to spread love and joy to his customers. Lee was on the Dean’s List when graduating from Parsons and has continued to flourish ever since, being quoted among the Best 50 New Generation of Hong Kong. He also humbly accepted the honor of having his uniform design adopted by the historic Forbidden City of Beijing. As the first Asian Designer, they staged a poetic debut of cultural and fashion exchange <qi of LOVE> at the prestigious Salle des Illustrs, Place du Capitole, France
Now you can get to know Civic a little better before you go check him out during Fashion Week!
Me: What was your inspiration for your 2013 collection?
Civic: To visualize the invisible, joy is an intangible emotion that we visualize and design into our collection. Our customers can feel the joy when they wear our pieces.
Me: If you could give an essential piece of style advice to women what would it be?
Civic: The curve at the back of neck is simply elegance. It’s the part which most women neglect the subtle beauty of it. Be playful, Pull your hair up!
Me: What do you think makes your line different from others?
Civic: Even though Rotten Banana is a womenswear label, each piece of our collection is created in both men’s and women’s fabrics. We are pioneering techniques of structuring. We always drape our garments when conceptualizing each design. Our clients will experience the tailored forms that highlight their body shape yet maintain the fluidity of their feminine beauty.
Me: What kind of music are you listening to right now? Do you have a favorite song?
Civic: Jazz. Well, “New York State of Mind” just popped up in my mind.
Me: What is your favorite part about working in the fashion industry?
Civic: The constant interaction that I have with all types of people. I aspire to share my positive energy that inspires others to keep dreaming. Rotten Banana shares the joy to those who are tempted to give up. It acts as a reminder of why and how they have come this far.
Me: What is your least favorite part?
Civic: Getting lost in translation.
Me: Tell me one quirky fact about yourself that I can’t find in your bio (it can be anything!)
Civic: My name is Civic. Every time right after I introduced myself to new people, they would say it reminded them of the Honda they used to get around when they were younger.
#3 Kahri by KahriAnne Kerr
kahrianne kerr, kahri, devin cole, fashion, 360, magazine, designers, 2013, new,
Khari is a contemporary women’s line founded by head designer KahriAnne Kerr. Don’t be fooled by her petite stature or her youth, KahriAnne designs with a sophistication that maintains a feisty edge. Not shying away from bold colors and prints, she creates what she calls “hip, funky, rocker, chic, contemporary women’s clothing”. Although she will not be showing at fashion week this season, she is definitely worth mentioning as a new designer to watch.
KahriAnne was never one to blend in and lived by her own style code. Born and raised in Iowa (not exactly the fashion capital of the world), she refused to be confined to her limited wardrobe options and began making her own clothes in high school. After winning “Most Promising Designer” at BYU-Idaho she started her own line in 2002. KahriAnne sold in boutiques in Iowa where her funky designs quickly flew off the shelves. She decided that it was time to take her brand to the next level and moved to New York City.

KahriAnne gives me a sneak peek of her 2013 collection, inspired by the 1920s, art deco, and music by Sia.  “Her newer albums are very funky and upbeat so I wanted something more colorful and fun.”
Showing no signs of her rural background, her audacious designs caught on in the big city as well. Receiving  the “Rising Star of Fashion Week” award from Lord & Taylor for her Spring 2011 collection, and winning the third episode of “24 Hour Catwalk” by Alexa Chung, she remained poised to become a contender in the contemporary women’s market. KahriAnne has sold in 20 boutiques in the US, Spain, Austria, Spain, and Israel. She has also dressed celebrities like Kanye West, BET’s Melissa Ford, and Keenyah Hill.
KahriAnne graciously invited me to her workroom in upper Manhattan to have a quick chat and get to know her better.

Me: what do you think makes your line different?
KahriAnne: I call my line hip, funky, rocker, chic, contemporary women’s clothing. I think my stuff’s a little different because I like it to be edgy but not so edgy that you can’t wear it. I think my line is very wearable but a little bit more unique than what’s already out there.
Me: Any other music that you are listening to right now?
KahriAnne: Well this year has been a good year for some of my favorite artists. New Garbage came out and I’m really excited for, in a few weeks, No Doubt. And new Cat Power is coming out.
Me: Is there any beauty product that you couldn’t live without?
KahriAnne: Pretty much all of them, I love makeup! Mascara, in particular.
Me: Any specific brands?
KahriAnne: Anything that’s cheap at the drugstore, Cover Girl, Maybelline, I’m not fancy.
You can purchase KahriAnne’s designs at www.kahri.com.

NOT by Jenny Lai S/S 2013

fashion, 360, magazine, neil gogoi, prive salon, hair, makeup, beauty, michael hanz, pla, r evolution, blushes, not, jenny lai, spring, summer, 2013, devin cole,
By: Devin Cole
Jenny Lai describes her 2013 Spring collection as “a meditation on and a celebration of the lightness of being”. The vibrant fabrics of her collection certainly communicated this exuberance. Creating a beauty look that could hold its own with the garments, while still letting the clothing be the star wasn’t easy but hair stylist Neil Gogoi of Prive Salon and makeup artist Mike Hanz pulled it off beautifully.

The hair:
“We are doing a very soft but messy kind of knot in the back. Then through the front we’re just detailing it with white pins and doing the same through the back as well. We used a texturizing mousse and combed it in to basically smooth everything down and secure the back.”
-Neil Gogoi

The makeup:
“The inspiration is a sunset in summer. So instead of doing the traditional, where it’s corals and oranges on the lip, we wanted to bring it into the eyes to make the eyes the focus-with a little bit of a hint of a lilac, mauve on on the lips. We’re kind of getting into the new trends for spring ’13.

We wanted to get really nice soft but hard soft features. You see stronger definition in color but it is all very muted at the same time. We used Play Beauty color and also R Evolution brushes. Play Beauty is paraben free, natural products. It’s really good for backstage but also for the everyday woman as well.”

AMOUR D’ARMOUR by Heidi Gardner

HEIDI GARDNER, devin cole, bdsm, jewelry, accessories, spring, summer, 2013, fashion, 360, magazine
By: Devin Cole
Heidi Gardner invited her guests to explore their darkest desires at her AMOUR D’ AMOUR presentation last night. The whole atmosphere felt like a modern day version of the painting Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch.
The designer pulled back the curtains on an array of sins that we all indulge in and try to conceal such as sexual fetishes (the models acted out BDSM-like scenes), drugs (the mirror on which the jewelry was displayed was decorated with white powder, some of it suggestively arranged in lines), and more. She shines light on these controversial topics and pokes fun at them to remove their stigma and encourage people to shrug off the restrictions imposed upon them by society. “I want them to feel inspired”, says Gardner, “I want them to feel like an urban warrior!”
Gardner displayed the skinless body parts of a dismembered goat on a silver tray near the bar where the hor d’oeuvres where being served, optimizing the visceral responses of the guests. Every detail of the event was carefully planned by the designer to create a transcendent experience.
Gardner was inspired by Rock and Roll (her favorite band is Led Zeppelin), ancient Greek weaponry, and Renaissance shields for her collection. “I always think about what I want the wearer to feel when I’m designing a piece. I always want to imbue a bit of strength and some subtle details.”
“Create your own image, create your own style. There is no such thing as trends for me.”

Porsche Designs S/S 2013

By: Devin Cole
Porsche Designs offered smart wardrobe options for men and women, mostly in classic neutral tones. The collection was composed of sleek looks with clean lines and under-stated but elegant detailing. Model’s hair was slicked back, with the occasional punch of red on the lips for the women.

My favorite part of the collection was the versatile handbags. Porsche kept modern women in mind when they designed the special feature for the handle. By un-clicking the metal closure at the base of the straps, you can take them from long to short or vice versa.

Mara Hoffman S/S 2013

By: Devin Cole
The Mara Hoffman show was by far the most highly attended show I have been to thus far! As soon as I walked through the doors to Lincoln Center I was met by the tremendous line to check in for tickets. Inside, the room was abuzz with excitement as we waited for the show to start (which like just about every other show at fashion week was running late). When the show finally started, Hoffman did not disappoint.
Three girls playing ukuleles introduced Hoffman’s tropics-inspired collection. The intricate patterns done in vibrant colors and the palm leaf accents in the hair carried the theme throughout the show. There were quieter moments in the show though. Hoffman occasionally broke up the stream of Technicolor with neutral separates and pieces in cream and soft teal with smaller monochromatic placement prints.
Rapper Lil Kim is a fan of Mara Hoffman
My favorite piece from the collection was this black dress with a chartreuse print on the front. I would wear this piece in a minute!

Daniella Kallmeyer S/S 2013

daniella kallmeyer, devin cole, designers, womenswear, mbfw, nyfw, spring, summer, 2013, fashion, 360, magazine
By: Devin Cole
Daniella Kallmeyer presented a collection that was extremely easy to wear, giving many options ranging from sporty to corporate. This same flexibility was applied to a few dresses that offered variety, coming in floor and cocktail lengths. She definitely thought about the modern’s woman’s lifestyle and offered solutions for any occasion.
Kallmeyer began the show with sharply tailored looks in black, creating some dimension by incorporating leather and metallic nylon. As the show evolved a pair of leggings printed with a abstract pattern, reminiscent of a floral that had a watercolor effect. The leggings were paired with a black, crepe peplum top that with elegant cut-outs at the shoulders. A look done in a jubilant shade of tangerine followed and grabbed the audience’s attention.
The collection progressed in almost the opposite direction in the feeling that it elicited while staying true to Kallmeyer’s aesthetic. Sky blues and white trotted down the runway on an astro-turf looking carpet, giving the impression of an upscale garden party on a warm spring day. It seems that color blocking sandals aren’t going anywhere for 2013 as all of the looks were styled with black, white, navy, and neon yellow color-blocked sandals.
For hair Kallmeyer choose a twist on the slicked-back look. She created interest by adding two cornrows that started at the temple and joined at the back. Their hair ties where hidden by a loc of hair that way wrapped around the base of the braid.
As for make-up the girls had bronzed cheeks and strong brows that were painted neon. The hair and makeup gave the impression of a modern sun goddess.

Angel Sanchez S/S 2013

By: Devin Cole
Images by: Rebekah Schott
Angel Sanchez’s presentation was a perfect example of a harmonious marriage of fine art and fashion. He collaborated with sculptor Rafael Barrios to create a dichotomic collection that was both sharp and soft. Although his designs where quite conceptual he was able to cleverly edit his work so that it was still wearable. His lofty approach to fashion notwithstanding, Sanchez is a very warm soul and welcomed my questions with a kiss on the cheek and a smile.

“My inspiration came from his work, the geometric work of Rafael Barrios. When I saw his sculpture on Park Avenue in the spring, I came up with the idea to explore the balance between geometric shapes and the princess line. Then the flower because I saw over near the sculpture, the tulip, so I though let me play with that. Because I have always been an architect, so princess lines and geometric shapes have helped me and have always been present in my work. And flowers are all about women, femininity, beautiful pastel colors. So that’s where it came from.”
