Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s cosmopolitan glass palace housed William Okpo’s Spring/Summer 2013 presentation on Tuesday, September 11th. Minimalism was the main attraction with this collection, as conveyed by the bountiful use of standard denim, polka dots, and an overall rectangular silhouette.

Fruits and dirt served as the setting, while the hair was up-done messily, with a shock of teased hair, sprayed white. Aaron Grenia, the key hair stylist of Prive Salon, states that “Ethnic, kinky, organic texture, with a white flame on top” was Okpo’s intention, as he wanted to extend the organic feeling of the clothing into the hair. Driven home by the boxes of dirt and platforms of oranges the models were standing on, “organic” read through quite successfully, so much so that one in attendance would have believed they were on a farm, save for the backdrop of the city.
